Phonics
Living to learn, learning to live.
Aim: That all children read fluently and can communicate well, using spoken and written English.
We have designed a vocabulary rich curriculum that connects learning by building an understanding of ideas, concepts, chronology and themes through the framework of ‘here, there and then, now, next’. These thinking threads link learning meaningfully to create opportunities to learn from the past and present as well as equipping children for an ever-changing and exciting future.
In phonics, we engage with texts that transport us from the here and now, broadening our understanding of the world there and then, and empowering us with skills to thrive next in our academic journey.
Phonics at Sithney School is taught following the Read, Write, Inc (RWI) Programme. Pupils are immersed in a directed teaching approach which embeds systematic phonics as the core skill for teaching reading. Letter sounds are taught in a specific order and regular assessment ensures pupils are correctly grouped according to ability. Daily phonic sessions follow a four part model where pupils are introduced to a new letter sound, revise the learning of letter sounds taught, have the opportunity to practice green reading words containing the focus phoneme and previous taught sounds and then forming graphemes containing the taught sound. The children are taught in small phonics groups according to their phonic ability.
Below is information linking to the sequence of the sounds taught, firstly beginning with set 1, single letter sounds and then once the children are confident with these, they will then move onto the set 2 and 3 ‘vowel’ sounds. Workshops and information on the website are offered to parents throughout the year to support the developing phonic knowledge and learning at home.
