MFL
Living to learn, learning to live.
Aim: That pupils can connect with people around the world.
We have designed a vocabulary rich curriculum that connects learning by building an understanding of ideas, concepts, chronology and themes through the framework of ‘here, there and then, now, next’. These thinking threads link learning meaningfully to create opportunities to learn from the past and present as well as equipping children for an ever-changing and exciting future.
In French, we communicate effectively here and now, drawing on the language’s cultural roots from then, and developing skills to engage globally next, fostering appreciation of different cultures.
The MFL taught at Sithney is French and is taught across KS2. Using our ‘core concept’ approach, our curriculum for French is taught using the language scheme ‘Rigolo’. ‘Rigolo’ is designed to progressively develop pupils’ skills in languages, through regularly taught lessons based around a range of topics that children would experience in the real world. Pupils progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary using the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. These skills help to equip our pupils with the skills to be confident citizens.
As part of the ‘Rigolo French’ programme, the children follow the exciting adventures of Jake, Polly and Bof as they discover France through lively interactions and colourful stories. Pupils will learn to appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the french language and they will broaden their vocabulary by developing their ability to understand new words.
By the time pupils leave our school, we aim for all pupils to speak French in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
